Party Etiquette for the Professional

Happy Holidays!

The holidays are upon us and it may be a good idea to brush up on office party etiquette.  It is also important to keep in mind that these suggestions should be applied in any social situation where your professional image is on the line.

Before you head out the door make sure you are dressed appropriately.  Don’t bring a guest unless the host or invitation specifies as such.  Lastly, be punctual as it reflects on your personal degree of professionalism.

Now that the party is in full swing you may want to let your hair down, but don’t.  Keep alcoholic drinks to a minimum and keep conversation polite and discreet.  If you are eating, then eat.  If you are talking, then talk.  Do not combine the two.  By all means leave the selfie stick at home and refrain from texting or taking calls unless it is an emergency.  Do not take pictures unless you are asked.  Upon leaving, make sure to graciously thank your host.

Hopefully you did not talk shop too much at the party.  However, if you did make contacts you should follow up with them sooner than later.  And even though this may seem like a lost art, a handwritten thank you note to your host is always appropriate.
